This is a follow-up from yesterday’s letter from Terry Farnham concerning the PacBell DSL - @Home article published on September 11, 2000. Eric, I believe you are correct in your assessment of DSL. You should, however, at least put in a small statement that DSL has been found to be faster during peak usage, and maybe a link to the following web site would be helpful. http://www.keynote.com/news/announcements/pr051799.html Terry Terry, Fair enough, I will append the article with this link and a note....although I have to say that the performance difference for most people even during peak periods is not terribly significant (moving from a 56K modem to either cable or DSL is a big win) and can be balanced by the off-peak performance that is significantly better than DSL. And to be honest, I have used cable modems in the past and have found the performance to in some cases exceed the performance of a T-1 at work....I've also seen it when it was fairly slow (My DSL link has also been slow - or nonexistent - as well). Also, this is a fairly old article (over a year old)....my understanding is that speeds on cable connections can hit 7Mbps now (the amount of bandwidth that one TV channel consumes). Note: I contacted Dan Berkowitz at Keynote Systems, Inc. to find out if they had updated this article since it is almost a year and a half old. They indicated that they hadn’t, but were considering it at some point in the future. Eric Svetcov |
